Ruth Hussey Passes

Okay. Again, as with most of the famous people I adore, you probably don't know her by name. Bu her face is very, very familiar. Assuming, ofcourse, you like movies that don't star that new Singing Sensation turned Shakespearean Actor: Justin-Kelly-Spears-Clark-Ville, or whatever his name is. I'm talking about the Golden Age of movies. Hussey was a marvelous actress with a huge list of credits. One of her most famous (or notable) roles, was playing opposite James Stewart in "The Philadelphia Story". She earned an Oscar nomination for it, but lost out to Jane Darwell (another great one) for portraying Ma Joad in "Grapes of Wrath". If you're still unsure of who I'm talking about, you can go here and read the story.

Here she is in "The Philidelphia Story".

She aged beautifully. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

I know. I know. I have so much to say about her, I could do 900 links and 45 dissertations. On the film, on Grant, Hepburn and Stewart, on the play itself, and then on her. I think you and I need to do a traveling Blog about this film. You do a part, then I'll do a part and we'll do it on the same day and decide who's going to talk about what. It would be the only way to do this thing justice.

Then we need to devote a whole post on HER.

Thanks for the link Alex. A talented and beautiful lady was she. I didn't realize she received an Oscar nom for Philly Story? Gosh all four Philadelphia Story stars are gone now. Makes me feel sad. Love that movie.

Yup. One of the best comedied ever made. And I think the reason is, because it's not just a comedy. It does everything. I goes everywhere. It doesn't stay in one place. Ever.

It's the reason I'm such a "Guffman" Freak.

Thank you, Alex, for this lovely post. Stevie here. I loved Ruth Hussey. When you think of the star-power she was surrounded by in Philadelphia Story, and how she more than held her own - - . I love it when Uncle Willie takes a shine to her and pinches her ass. She was of that rare breed of non-actorly actors from that era that seemed so modern. She reminds me a lot of Myrna Loy in her natural delivery and bemused attitude.

Just heard that John Mills passed away, also in his late 90's. What a magnificent performer he was.

Yeah, Stevie. EXACTLY!

During a time when big faces and huge gestures were King, she (and the rest of this cast) gave small, interesting, believable performances. Hussey was never over the top. It makes me a little sad to think how many people actually remember her. Everyone's too obsessed with Paris Hilton's new film: "House Of Wax".

Kill me now.

Alex - it's Sheila. I'm working on a big post about her for tomorrow. I really only know her from this one movie - so look for it! You provide the good background for the rest of her amazing career. And I love to see the picture of her as an older woman. Incredible.
