Video Friday (Toni Tennille-"Shop Around")

  • Apr. 11th, 2008 at 1:39 AM

I miss Toni Tennille. I loved her voice. At a time when vocalists really had to stretch themselves in order to make the mundane a hit record, I always felt that Tenille stood out. And could really hold her own with the big girls in town. Aretha, Labelle, Knight, all of them had a defined sound to them, and Toni stood shoulder to shoulder with them.

She had a blues quality to her that leant itself to the pop sound Neil Sedaka helped create. I still remember he talk show, and I still remember loving the moments where it was just her and her music…oh, and her husband. The guy with the hat.

Her use of her odd Shape and her strange Topography also fascinated me. She seemed at odds with her physicality but never seemed strained at any time, I got it. I understood it. And it always came from a place of natural ability. The music moved her and it filled her. That’s all I ever cared about.

Oh Toni,,,,make another album. Please?

My lord, I didn't know she had a t.v. show?!? This is what comes from being raised by wolves in the wilderness - my knowledge of pop culture is shockingly lacking.

No sweetie
Believe me when I tell you, the fact that I know (and remember) her TV show says MUCH more about me than it does about you.

.....and in a much more pathetic and sad way. ;-)

Re: No sweetie
You are SO not alone...while my parents wouldn't let me watch Laugh-In...they DID let me watch The Captain & Tennille Show. An yes I loved every minute of it -- even though I could never understand why he never talked.

Go Figure.

btw...I also remember Shields & Yarnell as well as Mummenschanz drawing on those 3 notepads on their heads!

I LOVED Toni Tennille's show...I remember singing "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" on one episode (oh yes, she did) and once she sang "Clean-Up Woman" (I misunderstood her and thought it was called "Peanut Woman"). Those, and the time she sang "You Never Done It Like That" on the show were my favorites...

She was a good interviewer, too. She had a great personality and was comfortable with her guests.
